What is Hospice Care?
Hospice is not a place, but rather a philosophy of care.
This care philosophy is one of true compassion and the belief that people have the right to make decisions regarding their lives and the type of healthcare they desire. At Hospice of Broward County, we offer the type of care where a patient’s healthcare wishes are heard and honored.
Hospice is a concept of care, devoted to providing services for those with a limited life expectancy. Those receiving hospice services choose to have care aimed at providing comfort and support when curative measures are no longer effective. Hospice provides medical care, spiritual services and emotional support to help ensure that the end stages of a patient's life are meaningful and peaceful.
Our hospice care is provided wherever your loved one resides - at home, in an assisted living facility, or in a skilled nursing facility.
The plan of care is individualized for each patient and developed collaboratively from input given by the patient, family, and the hospice care givers. We work closely with the patient's personal physician to develop this comprehensive plan of care.
Hospice takes a holistic approach in caring for patients and families. Open Access to treatments or procedures are provided when results are expected to lead to better symptom control. Tube feedings, intravenous fluids or hyper alimentation (TPN) are used when they contribute to comfort or relief of distressful symptoms. Blood transfusions and antibiotic therapy may sometimes be used for the patient's comfort.
At Hospice of Broward County, our goals are to:
- Manage your physical pain and keep you comfortable
- Provide emotional support for you and your family
- Address your spiritual needs through chaplains and rabbis
- Help you with your daily living activities
- Guide you and your family in care giving
- Provide bereavement support for your family
We work with the entire family to help manage care. If you have any medical questions or concerns, we have nurses available to speak with you day or night, 24/7.
